The University of Wisconsin at Stevens Point has proposed dropping 13 majors in the humanities and social sciences — including English, philosophy, history, sociology and Spanish — while adding programs with “clear career pathways” as a way to address declining enrollment and a multimillion-dollar deficit.

Здравый смысл в университете, поразительно по нынешним временам. Интересно, нет ли тут какой причинно-следственной связи с тем геноцидом, который тамошний губернатор Уокер устроил пару лет назад университетской публике.

Пока что оно вполне полезное. У меня сын скоро заканчивает четырехлетнюю инженерную программу в Urbana-Champaign, так это совсем не ПТУ.

engineering was never part of the problem. we are talking about other, murkier, majors.

in princeton, engineers were even freed form distribution requirements. one of D's family friends ( they had a "twins group" - was inmy class. AND in my club. she was shocked to realize we had not met. well, i was partying and playing volleyboll, she was studying.

look. i taught in electrical engineering programs at undergrad, masters, and doctoral levels. as a TA, now as a professor.

these are not бесполезное образование. however there is plenty of english, anthropology, political science, women's studies, even european languages etc - that are basically useless in the sense that the graduates with an A.B. or B.A> or even B.S. are unemployable, since they have not acquired marketable skills.

i find it unwise to blame the university. the unis are commercial enterprises. they are not forcing anybody into their Theater major and Sociology minor. studnets are responsible for their choices - including bad ones, those who will land tehm in the market place without anything to claim other than ooo, i went to Yale.

Судя по тому, что о замене majors заговорили в связи с declining enrollment, студенты (и их родители, надо думать) начинают что-то подозревать. Мне понравилось, что это Висконсин. Я Ивану Ганди на DW говорил - вон в Mizzou после тамошнего воспаления социальной справедливость enrollment упал на треть за два года, так там такие идеи пока вроде не появились.

я просто говорю что замена будет плохая, в моем опыте. я и наблюдала и сама участвовала в тектонических изменениях образовательных парадигмов - и это было всегда хуже в конце дня.
