The excuse for sending federal police here is to protect federal property. The reality is that this is a cynical re-election ploy aimed at earning support for a law-and-disorder president.
President Donald Trump's poll numbers continue to sink as cases and death tolls rise. The only thing that could possibly save him is political violence in America's cities. And that's what he's cooking up.

And what better way now than to send armed federal officers in unmarked cars into cities that don't want them? Unfortunately, protesters in Portland easily rose to the bait. And that chaos set off violent clashes, this time with local police, in Seattle, Omaha and Oakland, California.

Буш-43 был республиканец, но он им был вполне хорош, да ещё на него можно было сваливать всё и вся. Трамп - первый президент за много десятилетий, который пытается (и не без успеха) реально вернуться - не к консерватизму, но к sanity.

Date: 2020-07-30 02:25 am (UTC)Месяц назад в National Review некто Stanley Kurtz писал про долгосрочный план Байдена по постепенному превращению пригородов в города - потихоньку убрать single-family zoning, сделать обязательными квоты affordable housing, заставить увеличить плотность населения, ограничить строительство дорог, потихоньку откачивать в город налоговые доходы, и прижимать автономию. Начать с обамовского AFFH плана, и его сильно углубить и расширить - в качестве рычага используя фонды HUD:

И в той же статье автор горевал, что Трампу с этим ничего не поделать, даже политический лозунг для второй кампании не выйдет:

The Trump administration said Thursday that it is revoking an Obama-era housing regulation designed to eliminate racial disparities in the suburbs, a move that fair housing advocates have decried as an election year stunt designed to appeal to white voters.
The move comes after President Donald Trump characterized the 2015 rule as an existential threat to the suburban way of life that will bring about more crime and lower home prices.
In a statement, Department of Housing and Urban Development Secretary Ben Carson said the regulation known as Affirmatively Furthering Fair Housing, or the AFFH rule, was “unworkable and ultimately a waste of time for localities to comply with.”

AFFH works by holding HUD’s Community Development Block Grants hostage to federal-planning demands. Suburbs won’t be able to get the millions of dollars they’re used to in HUD grants unless they eliminate single-family zoning and densify their business districts. AFFH also forces HUD-grant recipients to sign pledges to “affirmatively further fair housing.” Those pledges could get suburbs sued by civil-rights groups, or by the feds, if they don’t get rid of single-family zoning. The only defense suburbs have against this two-pronged attack is to refuse HUD grants. True, that will effectively redistribute huge amounts of suburban money to cities, but if they give up their HUD grants at least the suburbs will be free of federal control.
The Booker approach — now endorsed by Biden — may block even this way out. Booker wants to hold suburban zoning hostage not only to HUD grants, but to the federal transportation grants used by states to build and repair highways. It may be next to impossible for suburbs to opt out of those state-run highway repairs. Otherwise, suburban roads will deteriorate and suburban access to major arteries will be blocked. AFFH plus the Booker plan will leave America’s suburbs with no alternative but to eliminate their single-family zoning and turn over their planning to the feds.

Известен, кроме всего прочего, такой фразой:

Он дошёл до верховного суда в борьбе против "busing" - и победил. Он не пропустил несколько "совместных инициатив" - чтобы Детройт "вместе" с окрестными графствами собирал деньги на ту или иную Очень Полезную Вещь (понятное дело, каждый собирает сколько может себе позволить, а Детройт ещё не отошёл от Кваме и банкротства).
В девятнадцатом Паттерсон умер, и его срок досиживает - без выборов - демократ Дэйвид "мы больше не можем притворяться, что Детройта не существует" Колтер. Все, включая школьные округа, понанимали консультантов по дайверсити. Директор школы в самый разгар погромов писал, что поддерживает "resistance".
Так что осенние выборы у нас будут интересными. Графство, естественно, раскошелилось на предоплаченные конверты для absentee voters.
