А вы почему-либо не верите автору книги? Она исследовала источники, накопила материал, приводит документы, выдержки из писем. Причём её книга, как я поняла, вышла до нынешней модной темы.

In what sense did Mark Twain "collect" those girls? Did he beat them up, mistreat them, kiss them, fondle them, did he have any kind of sexual intercourse with them, did he force them to parade naked around the "billiard room", did he make lewd photos of them? Looks like he didn't do any of that kind of things... Reading the article gives me an impression that he merely talked to the girls and allowed them to give him hugs.

How do you know for certain he did or he didn't do any of those things? You haven't studied the subject. Besides, Twain is a product of Victorian society - which in its latest period was incredibly crooked: enormously prudish and forbidding on the surface and equally enormously corrupt and filthy underneath. Child and young adult exploitation, including sexual, was the norm of the day.
"Reading the article gives me an impression" that more likely than not he did have an abnormal fondness of prepubescent girls, up to the point of physical contact.
A lot of pedophiles sincerely believe they they are not simply sexually attracted to children but they are in mutually reciprocated emotional relationship with them. In short, they love the child and child loves them.
There is also such a thing as grooming - ever heard of that? That's what the pattern of his behavior looks like.
Once they were out of attractive age, he got rid of them - on pretext of their friendship being improper. Oh, the irony.

The paper gives no clear indication that Twain actually did anything besides spending time in the company of young girls. If the author of the article had found any evidence for actual committed sexual acts or anything tangible, I'm sure she would have already screamed about the "dirty old man" in the headline.

The book (not "paper") doesn't make the claims you think it makes.
Again, "spending time in company of young girls" is tangible enough for me.

Естественно. В том то и фишка. Я уверен, первые "труды" на эту тему никаким морализаторством не занимались а только лишь гнались за сенсационной клубничкой. А что сейчас происходит - это мне пока не понятно. Есть некоторые мысли, но я их еще думаю пока, как та мартышка.
